Przekroczenie granicy amerykańsko- kanadyjskiej biegiem nie jest możliwe. Pozostaje samochód i przepiękny most, podobny do Golden Gate w San Francisko, lub tunel. Wybraliśmy tunel. Urzędnik kontrolujący dokumenty nie pytał nawet o aplikację ArriveCAN, życzył nam tylko powodzenia w drodze do Montrealu.
Tuż za mostem jest McDonald- to tam czekał na nas PID Ron Davos, DG Valerie Burningham oraz liczące ok. 30 osób stado lokalnych biegaczy pod wodzą Gary Balangera, właściciela lokalnej sieci sklepów Running Factory. Ruszyliśmy do wspólnego biegu.
Przed City Hall czekała na nas kolejna grupa mieszkańców Windsor pod przewodnictwem Councillor Gary Kaschak. Byli także znani mi doskonale z spotkań online Dana Covers i Isaak Czudner. Gary Kuschak po przywitaniu opowiedział o tym co to jest LCR, od ilu lat biegamy i jakie są tego efekty w postaci pomocy dzieciom. Przyznaję, sam bym tego lepiej nie zrobił. Głos zabrał także Roman, który opowiedział o sytuacji na Ukrainie oraz Susanne.
Wieczorem udaliśmy się na spotkanie LC Windsor Dowtown zorganizowane przez nieocenionego Rona Davosa. „Here starts International”- to hasło LC Windsor Downtown ma błęboki sens. W 1920 r. zaledwie w 3 lata po założeniu pierwszego klubu Lions w Chicago, założono LC WD. Był więc to pierwszy klub zagraniczny, a 2 lata temu obchodził od 100 lecie. Co ciekawe, w 2004 r., kiedy kończyłem moją kadencję jako Gubernator Polski i kiedy założyliśmy LC Lviv, to właśnie tutaj odbywała się Światowa Konwencja LC. W 22 lata później biegniemy przez Windsor do innego kanadyjskiego miasta, polsko- niemiecko – ukraińskim zespołem, aby realizować ideę We Serve.
Ron zaprosił także przedstawicieli stowarzyszeń ukraińskich i polskich działających w tym mieście. My rozdawaliśmy koszulki, a nasze koleżanki i koledzy z LC WD zebrali w tym czasie ok. 3000 $ na cel charytatywny LCR 2022- dzieci w Ukrainie.
Wśród gości był także Bogdan, emigrant z Polski, rodem ze Stargardu Szczecińskiego z ukraińskimi korzeniami. Bogdan zabrał nas jeszcze na chwilę do Domu Polskiego w Windsor, gdzie zostaliśmy ugoszczeni kiełbasą i pierogami z kapustą.
Dziękujemy Ronowi, Valerii, Garemu, Bogdanowi oraz wszystkim naszym koleżankom i kolegom z Windsoru. Dla takich spotkań i takich efektów warto biegać tysiące kilometrów.
We Run We Serve
W tym roku we serve Ukrainę
Day 3 June 18, 2022
In the morning, a 20 k run along Lake Michigan. Then we get in the car and rush to Canada. This 500 km section, which we cover by car, as we set at the very beginning, does not count as our 1,026 km route.
Crossing the U.S.-Canadian border running is not possible. We are left with a trip by car and going either over a beautiful bridge, similar to the Golden Gate in San Francisco, or through the tunnel. We choose the tunnel. The clerk checking the documents doesn’t even ask about the ArriveCAN app, he just wishes us good luck on the way to Montreal.
Just over the bridge there is McDonalds – this is where PID Ron Davos, DG Valerie Burningham and a flock of about 30 people of local runners led by Gary Balanger, the owner of the local Running Factory chain of stores, were waiting for us. We went on a joint run.
In front of City Hall, another group of Windsor residents was waiting for us, led by Councilor Gary Kaschak. There were also Dana Covers and Isaak Czudner, very well known to me from our online meetings. After the greetings, Gary Kuschak talked about LCR: what it is, how many years we have been running and what the effects of helping children have been. I admit, I wouldn’t have done it better myself. Then spoke Roman – about the situation in Ukraine; finally and our dear friend Susanne spoke, too.
In the evening we went to the LC Windsor Downtown meeting organized by the invaluable Ron Davos. ‘Here starts International’ – this slogan of LC Windsor Downtown is so true! In 1920, just 3 years after the founding of the Lions’ first Club in Chicago, LC WD was founded. It was the first foreign club – only 2 years ago did we celebrate its 100th anniversary.
Interestingly, in 2004, when I was finishing my term as Governor of the District 121 Poland and when we founded LC Lviv, it was here that the LC World Convention was held. 22 years later, we run through Windsor to another Canadian city, a Polish-German-Ukrainian team, to implement the idea of We Serve.
Ron also invited representatives of Ukrainian and Polish associations operating in this city. We were handing out T-shirts while our colleagues from LC WD raised about $ 3,000 for the LCR 2022 charity in Ukraine.
Among the guests was also Bogdan, an emigrant from Poland, a native of Stargard Szczecinski, with Ukrainian roots. Bogdan took us for a moment to the Polish House in Windsor, where we were hosted with sausage and dumplings with cabbage.
Many thanks to Ron, Valeria, Gary, Bogdan and all our colleagues from Windsor. For such meetings and such effects, it is worth running thousands of kilometers.
